This week Charles Darwin Primary was excited to host a talk from Ben Price, a Green Party councillor who works at City and County Hall, giving the academy’s pupils the chance to discuss the climate change issues they have been learning about in their Geography lessons.

As part of the school’s Year 6 Geography unit on Climate Change and Extreme Weather, the pupils at Charles Darwin Primary look at the environment and what can be done to combat climate change, as well as link their prior learning to the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals.

Ben Price took the time to talk to the children about what climate change is, the impacts of climate change both personally and to wider society, as well as what individuals can do to tackle the problems that we are all facing. As a councillor, it was a great opportunity for Ben to give the Year 6 pupils some insight into what local governments can do to help and what strategies they employ too.

Oliver Wray, Assistant Principal at Charles Darwin Primary said:

“We are so grateful to Ben for coming into school to give our Year 6 pupils a talk on climate change. Our children proudly shared the knowledge they had, as well as asking inquisitive questions. They were fascinated by Ben’s insight and all learned a lot about what they can do to help the environmental problems we all face.”

The visit from Ben was informative and inspiring and the pupils asked an excellent range of questions which showcased the rich knowledge gained from their geography lessons. We are very proud.

Ben Price, Green Party Councillor said:

“It was an absolute pleasure to come in and speak with the students. They were brilliant. I was genuinely impressed with the understanding of this crucial issue. Understanding the links to biodiversity and re-wilding, that plastic is made from oil, the hotly debated subject of EV cars, climate change inequality, and much more. I’m always impressed by the teaching standards and school ethos at Charles Darwin. Thank you for all the hard work you and all the staff undertake.”

Charles Darwin Primary values the opportunity to bring guest speakers into school so that our pupils get access to people working in a range of job roles, helping to grow their aspirations and interests as well as see the wide variety of opportunities that lay before them. It provides a fantastic opportunity to put knowledge and learning to practical use, allowing them to gain further information from real experts.

Providing these role models inspires pupils to work hard and achieve while giving them the opportunity to delve deeper into subjects that really interest them.
